KDH seeks feedback on new Patient Declaration of Values
Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) is seeking feedback on the draft Patient Declaration of Values developed by its Patient and Family Advisory Committee (PFAC).
The Patient Declaration of Values is a series of statements designed to reflect what patients and families value in their healthcare experience; for example, “I value being treated with courtesy and respect that fully recognizes my dignity, my privacy, my individuality, confidentiality and my human rights.” The draft statements are grouped under five categories: Dignity and Respect, Compassion and Caring, Collaboration and Communication, Quality and Safety, and Clarity and Confidentiality.
KDH wants to know if the draft statements reflect what the patients and families who receive care at the hospital value. To make the Declaration more engaging, it has been created as an infographic. KDH invites members of the communities it serves to review the draft Declaration on its website and provide feedback through the avenues listed there. Feedback is requested by September 15, 2018.
After community feedback has been collated and incorporated wherever possible, the final Patient Declaration of Values will replace KDH’s decade-old “Patient Bill of Rights”, which was developed in consultation with community stakeholders in compliance with the Ontario government’s Excellent Care for All Act (ECFAA). The Patient Bill of Rights was a series of statements designed to reflect the hospital’s commitment to patient-focused care, and clarified what patients could expect from KDH.
In light of KDH’s significant efforts in recent years to deliver Patient and Family Centred Care in its fullest form – partnership with patients, both in their care and at our decision-making tables – it was decided that it was time to review the Patient Bill of Rights. KDH now has a Patient and Family Advisory Committee (PFAC) made up of volunteer Patient and Family Advisors, and it was this group that took on the task of reviewing the statements. Like those of many other Ontario hospitals, KDH’s Patient Bill of Rights has evolved into a Patient Declaration of Values.
