Kemptville District Hospital is seeking multiple Clinical Externs to join our growing team!

Funded by the Ministry of Health’s Enhanced Extern Program, the Clinical Extern is employed as an unregulated care provider, working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, to enhance and effectively support safety and quality of care for patients of KDH. This program is open to clinical learners including students of nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy programs. This provides the clinical learner with an opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop important skills for a career in health care, gain patient care experience, and to work with and learn from our incredible nursing and allied health team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attends to the personal care, nutritional, emotional, mobility, and safety needs of patients.
    • Bed Linen Changes
    • Personal Care and Grooming
    • Toileting
    • Answering Bells
    • Passing/Collecting Trays
    • Stocking Supplies/Carts
    • Obtain/Document Vital Signs
    • Obtain/Document Weights
    • Ambulation/Transfers
    • Portering
    • Emptying Catheters/Ostomy
    • Documenting Intake and Output
    • Glucoscans/QC Checks
    • Assist with Feeding/Snacks
    • Assist with Repositioning
    • Assist with Mechanical Lift
    • Observe/Report Changes in Patient Condition to Registered Staff
    • Directed to Assist with Emergency Situations
  • Participates in learning opportunities with Manager/Registered Nurse mentor
  • Other duties as delegated by their Manager/Registered Nurse mentor

Qualifications:

  • BScN students – Must have completed their 1st year of studies;
  • Practical Nursing students – Must have completed their 2nd year of studies;
  • Current BCLS;
  • Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices;
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team;
  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns, changes in the patient’s condition;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care;
  • Proficient computer/technological skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and to adapt to change rapidly.
