Melissa Ruigrok

Melissa Ruigrok is a seasoned healthcare executive, Nurse Practitioner, and strategic leader with more than 20 years of clinical, administrative, and governance experience across hospital, government, Indigenous, and international health systems.

A resident of Eastern Ontario and a passionate advocate for rural and community-based care, Melissa brings a unique blend of operational insight, clinical expertise, and board governance.

Melissa’s healthcare journey spans roles in primary care, acute care, emergency medicine, Long Term care including palliative services at rural hospitals like Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, to directing countrywide operations for the U.S. Embassy’s medical clinics across Canada. She has led cross-functional teams, overseen public health programs, managed multimillion-dollar budgets, and supported high-level diplomatic and emergency health planning, including for U.S. Presidential visits. Currently, she serves the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority, delivering virtual urgent and primary care to remote First Nations communities, where she champions culturally safe and accessible care. Melissa is also currently a Nurse Practitioner part time at Hillel Lodge in Ottawa, where she became the first to establish the NP role and has been instrumental in advancing an innovative model of long-term care focused on high-quality, resident-centered services. She is a recognized expert in clinic start-up and design, with a proven track record in launching and leading new care models that respond to evolving community needs and system-level gaps.

A recognized leader in health equity and human capital development, Melissa has long emphasized inclusive governance, psychological safety, and talent mentorship. She has spearheaded successful start-up clinics, co-developed emergency response frameworks, and implemented national-level occupational and public health strategies.

Melissa’s diverse background spanning community health, rural hospitals, long-term care, and international diplomacy is further enriched by her current pursuit of an Executive MBA at Queen’s University, where she is focused on health strategy, board governance, and financial stewardship.

A lifelong learner and community contributor, she has served on multiple quality, safety, and professional committees, and is a decorated recipient of awards for leadership and service, including recognition by U.S. Presidents and Ambassadors.

Melissa is committed to helping KDH remain agile, inclusive, and people-centered, bringing both heart and expertise to the Board of Directors.
